National Grand Prize Winner:
Daniel Sprouse, Merrillville, IN
“My Life, My Faith, My God”
DARNELL ANDERSON, a typical hardworking husband and father faces increasing pressure from his wife, NICOLE to steer away from his UNLCE JOE’S Restaurant, to attain meaningful employment and become upwardly mobile. UNCLE JOE’s is not your average eatery, but a haven for prostitutes and drug addicts. NICOLE’s friends don’t make it any easier as they egg her on to make a stand against DARNELL.
Things turn sour and NICOLE leaves DARNELL. Throughout, DARNELL sticks to his faith in not only his uncle but the calling of God upon his life to “stand still” and wait. That wait finally pays off as his ailing uncle authorizes him to take over the restaurant on the condition the restaurant remain a Christian beacon of light to the downtrodden community it resides in. NICOLE and DARNELL reconcile and start anew on the tail-end of a vicious storm.
This play, with its dialogue, highlights the real true-isms found in relationships in 2008. The characters weaved in this spiral are rich and glowy and the story is well-paced with a saucy rhythm. The piece also delves into an age old human struggle; material gain over spiritual growth. The Black Gospel Play Association congratulates Daniel Sprouse on this award winning spiritual play. Daniel is truly a minister in the dramatic arts.
